Coherence Diagrams

Coherence Diagrams is part of Topologies of Existence (TOE), an umbrella project whose acronym is a deliberate nod to the Theory of Everything: that elusive master key physics has long sought without finding, and around whose possibility all branches of the project orbit. TOE emerged as a response to an earlier question: Ana Montiel's "entoptic paintings" had explored the phenomenology of subjective perception, inner experience as pictorial territory.
TOE penetrates the phenomenological surface to investigate what lies beneath: the silent choreographies of the order of things, the nature of reality beyond the apparent. Symmetry, systems, cyclical repetitions, elements that exist outside the range of human perception. Its first manifestation STREAMS (surrounding, trans-dimensional realities experienced as mutable sentience), presented at Lago/Algo in Mexico City, charted the currents between states of being: the porousness between what we perceive and what we are, the cuts and continuities between fragments of reality. Coherence Diagrams takes a further step: it asks not only how we move between realities, but how we might intervene in that process with intention.
The question at the heart of the project is simple in its formulation and profound in its implications: can an interior shift produce a real change in the reality we inhabit? Contemporary neuroscience answers yes, and not as metaphor. Sustained, directed attention produces measurable changes in neural architecture: new synaptic connections, alterations in neuroplasticity biomarkers, reconfigurations in the brain networks that construct perception. The interior generates. It does not merely reflect.
Quantum biology extends this toward deeper scales: proton tunneling within DNA, quantum coherence in ion channels, processes unfolding at the threshold between the classical and the quantum inside the living body. For example, recent research on butterfly wing morphogenesis shows that evolution itself does not operate in purely gradual terms: it generates phenotypic novelty through leaps, discontinuous reconfigurations of the space of possible forms, reorganizations of existing elements into new coherences. Change, in biology as in consciousness, is not always accumulative. Sometimes it is a collapse toward a configuration that previously existed only as possibility.

The project is in dialogue with this constellation of knowledge: quantum biology, Jungian depth psychology, Daoist philosophy, the alchemical tradition, and Stoic thought. Distinct lineages converging on the same intuition: that the observer and the observed are not separable, and that transforming the gaze transforms the world that gaze constructs. Coherence Diagrams offers no definitive answers about these phenomena. It invites us to inhabit them as active questions, to recognize perception as a practice rather than a given, and to consider that all transformation begins, perhaps, with a deliberate shift in attention.
The exhibition brings together a series of new paintings and an audiovisual work, The Unfolding Self (notes for an ever-evolving reality), both focusing on the process of transformation. The paintings, organised in panoramic compositions traversed by cuts, displacements and evolutions, mark moments of transition between one configuration of the self and another, between one reading of reality and the next. Painting functions here as a field of investigation: the forms, rhythms and compositional variations do not illustrate concepts but embody them, making visible a process of change rather than a fixed reality. Each image presents itself as an open diagram, provisional, the map of a transformation in progress, inviting the viewer to move through it without a single reading or a closed meaning.

THE UNFOLDING SELF (notes for an ever-evolving reality)
Years of this /
Thinking about quantum biology at 5 in the morning /
meditating on what’s possible and what isn’t /
with neuroplasticity as the northern star /
and as the name I gave to hope when hope needed a harder name /
I have been researching what happens when matter stops behaving /
when the body becomes a field instead of a machine /
when biology dreams /
The physics of desire we have not yet learned to measure /
but the instruments are getting closer /
The difficult years came not as teachers /
They came as floods /
and what the flood does /
if you let it /
is showing you the shape of the land underneath /
The question that was once theoretical became the question I lived inside /
How does one actually jump timelines /
Not as philosophy /
As practice /
As the thing you do when the old configurations keep insisting on themselves /
We are co-creators of the reality we experience /
More than we were told /
More than is comfortable /
The distance between knowing this and living it /
is the territory this project tries to map /
There is a word quantum physics and human experience share without having agreed to /
Collapse /
In quantum mechanics, collapse is the moment a superposition of all possibilities /
becomes one thing /
Before collapse: everything /
After collapse: something real /
What we call reality is the accumulated sum of every collapse that has already happened /
and what has not yet collapsed /
is still everything /
all of it /
waiting /
The alchemists said: in the void there is everything /
They were not being mystical /
They were being precise /
Moments when my life collapsed /
in the most human sense of that word /
I found that collapse and potential are the same phenomenon /
seen from different positions in time /
The falling as threshold /
The breaking as aperture /
Not automatically /
Not without cost /
But the nothing that remains when everything has broken has a particular texture /
It resembles very much /
a beginning /
I’d say neuroscience has a name for the garden of the mind /
Neuroplasticity /
The brain’s capacity to rewire itself /
to form new synaptic connections /
to reconfigure its own architecture /
in response to sustained and directed attention /
This is not metaphor /
It is measurable /
New routes /
New bridges /
New geometries of perception growing slowly /
like roots finding water underground /
What you take care of /
with attention and intention /
remakes you /
The interior generates /
It does not reflect /
And quantum biology goes further inward still /
Proton tunneling in the DNA /
particles crossing barriers they classically cannot cross /
Quantum coherence in the ion channels /
those molecular gates /
that decide which neuron fires /
which thought arrives /
which world gets built /
Processes at the exact threshold between the classical and the quantum /
inside the living body /
happen right now /
And evolution itself /
does not move only in gradients /
Recent research on butterfly wings shows this clearly /
An eye appears where no eye was /
Not through slow accumulation /
but through sudden reorganization /
existing elements jumping toward a new coherence /
a configuration that before existed only as possibility /
is now real /
visible /
flying /
Change is not always accumulative /
Sometimes it is a collapse toward something /
that was always already there /
A team of scientists/
running an experiment to understand the Big Bang /
accidentally made gold from lead /
The quantity was negligible /
That is not the point /
The point is that it happened /
what centuries have called the delusion of alchemists /
the fever of madmen /
the impossible metaphor /
turned out to be physics /
Lead becomes gold under the right conditions /
The question is, which are the right conditions for us? /
Time ago I read that the mind is shaped by the architecture the body inhabits /
Low ceilings and right angles /
produce a certain kind of thinking /
while the geometry of space without obvious limits /
produce other minds entirely /
The exterior geometry folds inward /
becomes the geometry of thought /
This makes me think about the architecture of the psyche /
and whether it is possible /
with intention, and practice /
to take a wall down /
or to open a window in a place that had only ever been stone /
This project was meant to include a manual /
I saw it as an “irrigation guide for the garden of the mind” /
A gathering of practices and tools /
rituals of rewiring I’ve been collecting over years /
But the most important formula cannot be given /
only pointed toward /
Intention is the seed /
Wanting to jump is /
eventually /
jumping /
Not in a straight line /
Not without loss /
Not all at once /
But the direction is held by the intention /
and the intention is a practice /
and the practice is daily /
and some days it is only surviving /
and that is also the practice/
In a world of increasingly rigid ideas /
and increasingly defined algorithms /
the radical act is permeability /
Openness /
Curiosity /
Humility /
The willingness to be reorganized /
From there we reformulate /
And in reformulating ourselves /
we reformulate what surrounds us/
we participate in the making of what is real/
Reality is not only what happens to us /
It is what we dare to imagine /
what we hold with enough attention /
for long enough /
for it to become solid /
The gold was always in the lead /
Knowing that, changes the way one looks at the lead /
